Just watched The Man With The Golden Arm, a 1955 movie starring Frank Sinatra as a heroin addict. For a movie over 50 years old, it is surprisingly frank in its depiction. Unlike most movies of the early days (like Reefer Madness) it avoids becoming unintentionally campy. You don't laugh at it with a snide smirk. Sinatra is classic here, the scene where he goes cold turkey is incredibly well-acted and is truly chilling to watch.
Definitely a good movie to put on your netflix queue.
