Today is the first day of my new eating regimen. I need to carve off some weight, as I feel like I have bloated up in the last two months or so. This is a terrible time corridor of the year for weight loss, what with Halloween candy, Thanksgiving, and all of December (perhaps the worst eating month of the year), but I need to stop eating in the same casual anything goes kind of way.

When I was nineteen I was as heavy as I have ever been (tho' now is pretty close) and I went away to college (William Paterson University rep-ra-sent-tuh). I started eating one main meal a day and one decent snack a day (usually trail mix or rice cracker mix). I made no friends on campus (boo hoo) so I found myself walking around for two hours at a time. The combo managed to allow me to lose about forty pounds in two months or so, to the point that people who hadn't seen me in a while assumed I had cancer (I also started shaving my head, so I looked like a guy who was going through either Chemo or Dachau). From that point forward I managed to keep off the weight for the most part by eating decently and walking a lot. As I have gotten older (like most everybody) I find myself eating worse and exercising less. I need to change that, as I am not all that old. My incentive is to slim down so as to appear more datable to the opposite, fairer, sex. Chubby doesn't cut it. Nor should it.

In any case, my relationship with food has always been complex (not as complex as my relationship with alcohol, but close). So, in order to regain control, I will eat much less and force myself to walk every day until I lose the disturbing amount of gut I currently sport. No real trick to it, no fad diet. Just eat less food, and no deep fried crap or heavily-sugared junk. I just need to regain my ability to be disciplined.

I won't write about my weight again until I have made significant inroads in terms of loss. Nothing worse than a smoker making bold proclamations that they have quit smoking on the first day they stop, only to light up again less than a week later.

I won't wish myself luck, because luck is irrelevant in this regard. I will miss Arby's though. That's fersure. My reward for losing the weight will be an Arby's and fries, when I am skinny enough to indulge in high calorics once in a while.
