Just saw the new Hulk trailer. Ed Norton is spot-on casting. It looks like they went more commercial than Ang Lee's attempt (which was flawed but had lots of great stuff in it). I need to see it properly (not on a choppy internet screen) but I am looking forward to it quite a bit now. As much as I make fun of Hollywood formula the three movies I most want to see now are Batman, Iron Man, and Hulk this summer. Not really art films, I admit. But all three look like superior examples of comic book movies (most of which I am not crazy about, despite rushing out and seeing just about all of them).
I have really been enjoying super hero comics lately. The old stuff. The Marvel Essentials stuff. Lots of fun. I am not nutty about comics nowadays. They seem too...painted to me. Too perfect. Like video games, as the art progresses I like it less. The comics now are too much about "edginess" and "reality". They could stand a little more of the old comic book's art, excitement and most of all...charm. Most comics now (and comic movies) tend to be soulless exercises in technique to me. The art is "great" the writing is "adult" but it just lies there.
