I now know three people who are in an (unbeknownst to them) race to severe imminent illness and/or possible death. That scares me, but when one, or possibly all three, succumb to illness brought about by addiction, I will not be very surprised. Rather, that if none of them are stricken with heavy-duty sickness it will only be one of those things, like Keith Richards or William S. Burroughs. Both of them managed (or manage) to get through life with a cornucopia of substances without nary a slowdown.
I understand addiction from the inside, but when you see other people battling it, it never makes sense. Your own addiction is totally explicable, but other people are crazy for messing around.
