So I've discovered a cool little critter in my back yard, the first couple of times I seen him buzzing around I thought that it was a small humming bird. Then today he darted under one of the flag stones next to my back porch. So I waited till he came out and couldn't believe it, and went and got my camera, and waited for him to come back. An hour and 15 minutes later he finally returned (obviously a solitary creature). here's a pic.
It's not the greatest pic, but anyway, can't tell there, but he's approximately 1.5" long, not counting the antannae. The female is supposed to be ever longer than that. It's a Cicada killer wasp, the female goes out paralyzes a cicada with her sting, and then carries it back to the nest, lays an egg on it, so when the larva hatches it will feed off the cicada. pretty cool.
