I think I want to try my hand at writing a western. It'll combine what I love about modern westerns, the gritty realism and action, with the romance and idealism of past years.
It'll be a tale of revenge, greed, redemption, and love. And adventure.
The year is 1880. Two desperadoes rob a bank in Texas, and head for the border, Texas Rangers hot on their trail. Once in Mexico, they encounter a group of banditos who demand tribute. This turns sour, and they're forced to run again. I won't give too many story details away, but this is where it really takes off.
There are two main characters. First, there's the Old Man. He's a veteran gunslinger. There isn't much he hasn't seen or done; he's pushing fifty in a career dominated by men in their twenties. He's tough as old leather, and meaner than a shaken-up bag of hornets. Rotten to the core. He just wants to get rich, spend it all, and get rich again.
Then there's Mick. He's a lot younger, just coming up in the world of violent crime. The stars haven't left his eyes, but he is fast and deadly. Six notches carved into the butt of his gun. He grew up reading dime novels and formed a picture of the Wild West in his mind that he is determined to make reality match.
I think it'd make a better movie than a book, but who knows.
