I can't believe I managed to actually ask someone out today... The result was exactly as I expected, and it was probably quite easy to perceive it as not being a serious. Still, at 28, this was pretty much the second time I've asked anyone out in my entire life. The first time I had one a couple of free passes to a concert, and the girl made sure to confirm that it was just as friends (friendship never sounded like such a dirty word).
Today --- Backstory! I help run a free amateur bar poker league, we play a couple of nights a week, and today was our monthly "Olympic Showdown" for the players who have finished top 3 during the month --- Ok, so, today at the bar, people kept buying me free drinks, which led to me drinking more than I had for quite some time, as I am not a heavy drinker. I wasn't plastered, or even drunk really, but I was probably a little louder then normal, and being surrounded by people I actually know and have grown accustomed too I wasn't as withdrawn as I usually am in large groups of people. Anyways, when the shift turned over and the new bartender came in I was instantly smitten.
Later on in the day a couple of us were talking about ages, and when I was telling one guy that he I didn't believe that he was 37, she chirped in asking if I believed she was 26. I had overheard someone mentioning that she was 21 earlier on in the day so I responded saying that. When she insisted that she was I offhandedly ask if she wanted to go out sometime.
She said she doesn't go out with people she meets through work. Which is obvious, and smart, and a good way to not say "of course I'm not going out with you, you creepy scum." I didn't (and couldn't) expect anything more. However, the fact that I managed to ask in the first place makes me happy, and amazed... Even though I had more then usual to drink, even though I knew I couldn't expect any thing close to a yes, even though it was asked offhand and almost as a joke, I'm still proud of myself.
One baby step at a time....
