Not a long reply at all. I'm unable to sleep and find myself on SG since 5:00am my time.
Baseball is also popular in Latin America. It's a way for kids to attempt to get out of a life of abject poverty.
I feel that one of the reasons that soccer hasn't caught on here is directly related to the overwhelming popularity of the sport in most other places around the world. I believe there is a certain arrogance here that believes that our sports, baseball, basketball and American football are superior to any sport that originates and is wildly popular in other parts of the world.
Even hockey, a sport which, to many people, is more exciting than any of the sports I've mentioned isn't as popular as it should be because it's considered a "foreign" sport. I know I sound very critical of my country's mindset and attitudes. However, these are my honest observations, whether they hold water or not.
