So. Back to the good news. I'm off to Northern Scotland finally on Friday morning. It'll be a completely different trip to the usual winter outing. The past few years have involved full-on winter conditions, narrow ridges, whiteouts and so on. But this time it's just about the wilderness. Hiking off over a couple of mountains, and camping out by a remote loch.
I will have to strip some weight out of my rucsac though. It's carving its way through my shoulders already, and I haven't even added the food yet.
The forecast is rough. 50-60mph NW winds, rain turning to snow on high ground, -10C windchill. It will be a hard first day, particularly as the two summits are very exposed, with some tough scrambling to reach them. At least the second day is gentler.
The question is, will I be so tired when I get back to the car, that I won't be able to resist going in search of hot food, warm baths and a cosy bed? It won't be the first time, although last year I ended up sleeping on a railway platform in a blizzard, sharing my chili with a tiny mouse.
Damn, I love winter!
