Today, I met a man who asked for help, standing outside the VA hospital. He approached me and asked if there was a [grocery store with a liquor store] nearby, because the hospital wouldn't admit him unless he was under the influence. His plan was to drink the night away, sleeping in a park, and hoping they would admit him tomorrow. He told me he has a new granddaughter, but he needs to get himself together before he goes to meet her. I wanted to help him, but honestly, I'm not much better off than he is, so I gave him a ride.

@pointman11 Right? Hell, if I could afford it, I'd have put him up in a hotel and paid for a bus ticket. In the meantime, he's self-destructing just to get better. But you know, "we love our veterans."

I get that a lot. I work downtown Indianapolis and encounter many in that situation. It sucks that people want to get better, get clean, get help, but since they are not already intoxicated they get denied. It makes no sense to allow someone to harm themselves more before helping
