Helloooo my peeps.
I tried to watch "The Cat Returns" last night but with only limited success as it appears my disc is scratched. It's a bit of a shame as the human character design is really remarkable and special in this one (there are a lot of cats, too, and the character design is clever, but not really amazing).
I really want to watch "Grave Of The Fireflies" again. I watched it once about two years ago and I found it a lot more moving than I'd anticipated. "Dancer In The Dark" has a similar effect on me, but I managed to watch that again a couple more times.
"Grave Of The Fireflies" though is something I just couldn't watch alone. On the other hand, it'd need someone who can actually get involved in an animated film with subtitles -- I know a lot of people who can't emotionally connect with animated characters. I watched Spirited Away with a friend once and he just bad-mouthed the film the whole way through:
Him: "As if the guy can turn into a dragon..."
Me: "It's a goddamn movie, man. Detach from reality okay?"
Him: "But come on! A bath-house for ghosts? There's no such thing as ghosts!"
Me: "Seriously. There's no such thing as predatory aliens from space, but you loved the Aliens movies."
Him: "That's different, though... this ... this is .... it's a cartoon."
Me:
"Grave Of The Fireflies" doesn't have dragons, though. It's just a couple of kids in Kobe, Japan, during World War II.
Anyway, op-shopping was fun but tiring. I picked up a couple of shirts and an old plastic clock that I'm going to try and convert into a snow globe. Should be ... interesting.
One of the shirts will be an ideal bowling shirt -- but you won't see it until bowling starts again for us in 2007. Damn. On the positive side: it was only $2!
