New things for me:

Last week, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts (Internet Studies) and the confirmation has now come through. I've not studied before, so this will surely be interesting. Moreso as it is through Open University, which means I'll have to motivate myself to work.

But what interests me most of all about the degree is that it concentrates a lot on the sociological aspects of the Internet, instead of the boring I.T. stuff robot. Virtual/online communities are a fascination of mine, especially in the way that they bring people together in various ways. Sites like MySpace or SuicideGirls, IRC, message boards, and even something like World Of Warcraft all come under that banner.

Two out of the four girlfriends I have had in the past eight years I met via online communities (the first was a Radiohead mailing list). So I'm no stranger to the various levels of interaction that can occur online.
Additionally, there are some really interesting topics that derive from this and can be related to the internet: proxemics, propinquity, as well as the sociological, psychological and anthropological aspects that have either developed or evolved through online interaction.

So, clearly, I'm excited by it. It starts on 27 November.

Apart from that, _Indigo_ introduced me to TV show American Dad last night and I'm well impressed by the hilarity. biggrin

Also I'm working on a blog with a friend of mine who's an anthropology student. The blog is called Hidden and discusses those phenomena of the world that we can't see or don't understand -- probably because we just aren't capable.

We only use up to 10% of our brains (this figure varies depending on the study but it's rarely higher than 10%), so what are we capable of if we had access to the other 90%? Is this space the only evidence that remains from past abilities we no longer have?
Every myth is based a little on reality: contacting the spirit world; the powers of tarot, astrology, crystals, knuckle bones, tea leaves, etc; faeries, gnomes, leprechauns, trolls, etc. Or more realistically, concepts like collective consciousness, mind reading, psychokinetics, mental projection, etc. surreal

Ultimately, "we're like a computer trying to understand what is outside of the computer". And we're blogging what we can find about it. Feel free to read the blog (updated every couple of days) and participate in the discussion in the comments.

Photos from bowling and BBQing are forth-coming, now that all of my "Wander" photos are up online.
