This study is clearly nuts. I don't believe a single thing about this hokey study. Here it is:
Well, Voyeurwebbers, they're at it again, attacking adult entertainment as "addictive" and the breeding ground of evil.
In this case, "they" are the LCS, or Lighted Candle Society, a non-profit organization which is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, home of the LDS, or Latter Day Saints, more commonly known as Mormons.
Now the LCS want to use magnetic resonance imaging - MRI - to "scientifically" prove that adult entertainment is addictive.
The head of the LCS is John Harmer, who has been taking various adult businesses to court for 40 years. Harmer wants to use the MRI results to prosecute adult entertainment producers.
"If we can use the MRI studies to prove that pornography is addictive, much in the same way that violence has been found to be addictive in previous research, then we can hold them fincially liable for the harm they are doing, and virtually cripple the industry," the appropriately named Harmer told the Brigham Young University newspaper.
While Eye certainly supports the LCS' right to believe what it wants, Eye does not believe adult entertainment is necessarily addictive. There are always going to be those in society who get addicted to one thing or another - gambling, drinking, doing hard drugs - but they are more the exception than the rule and they tend to have compulsive-addictive personalities.
One of those supporting the LCS effort even went so far as to imply that addiction to adult entertainment is a key factor among serial killers, and cited one of the worst of that lot of the worst, Ted Bundy, as an example. Bundy, who was executed years before there was an Internet, was a sick, twisted and brutal human being, and Eye's only regret is that he wasn't caught and executed much sooner.
If the outrageous claim that adult entertainment breeds serial killers were true, there would be many, many more of them and this simply is not the case. In fact, other studies have shown that there is a much more direct link between serial killers and abuse they suffered as children.
Eye doesn't know what the LCS' MRI tests will show, if anything, but one thing is clear: Though much progress has been made in understanding how some portions of the human brain work, we are still a long, long way from understanding everything about the brain.
Another thing is also clear: How we treat one another and are treated by others is a major factor in how we act. K
