I'm fat.
I'm not saying it as some kind of plea for positive affirmation. It's just a fact. I'm not morbidly obese, but 20 lbs ago I was thinking I needed to lose a little weight. So now I am 244 lbs, and really should be around 200.
My solution to this? I've signed up for a half marathon with a work buddy. It's on May 2nd, so I have time to get ready for it. I ran one in 2006 when I was about 220, and finished in 2 hours 25 minutes. I was happy with that, and would be happy to do that again. So why a half marathon and not, say, a gym membership? It's simple: If I tried to do this and lose weight by going to the gym I'd procrastinate and never go. This way, I have a deadline (May 2nd) and a tangible target (13.2 miles). I can focus not on my weight, but on my ability to run distance.
So yesterday was Day 1 of "training". I spent 30 minutes on an elliptical machine. Doesn't sound like much, but this week I think I am going to just take it slow. Mon, Wed and Fri I'll hit the elliptical and start getting my heart rate up and building my stamina back up. Next week I'll start running on the treadmill again and see just how bad off I am.
I'm excited though. And maybe after may 2nd I'll sign up for another. I think running two half's a year (I really have no desire to do a full marathon) will keep me focussed enough to keep me on the running path.
Wish me luck. I'll be posting about my progress here, because, well why the hell not
