What a week, and it is only Wed. Not in a bad way necessarily, but here goes:

Pump on the pool needs to be replaced so I am draining the pool for winter with a sump pump, which takes a while. I've also never done this before - first year in this house - so I hope I have drained it enough.

Last night I come upstairs to find my computer had rebooted itself, and is now complaining that there was no hard drive. Everything was "gone". Including wedding photos my girlfriend had shot, and not been paid for yet. At the moment I am recovering the files, cost me $75 for the program and $100 for a new drive, but hey! Bright side: nothing lost and I got a shiny new 1 Terrabyte hard drive.

Now the real topsy turvy part of this week. I worked from home yesterday so I am sitting at my desk in my office and my girlfriend's kid is home sick from school. She's 8. She walks in and wants to know "Why are we here?"

I blinked. Thinking she meant why am I working in the office and not on my laptop in the living room so I could watch Monsters vs Aliens with her, I start to reply.

She interrupts: Why are we on Earth?

I blinked again. Ok, I can handle this. That's one of the biggest questions of all time, I tell her, no one knows for sure.

She says, Is that why some people say life isn't worth living?

Me: Uhm, well, those people are probably sad, or depressed, or something bad's happened to them.

She says, But if we're just going to die and make people sad, why is life worth living?

Things went downhill from here, believe it or not. My only saving grace was that the questions came too fast for me to answer before she was on the next one. Here's a sample:

Where were we before we were born?
How did the earth get made?
Is there a god? There might not even be a god, and what if there is, but he's bad, and everything we think is good and is God is really bad?
And more.

I am an atheist, but prefer to let her make up her own mind. So those conversations I tried to explain about Faith and people not knowing for sure, but Believing, and she was on to another topic before I could finish explaining.

This all ended when in talking about the Big Bang she mentioned Saturn, and my brain clicked and I said "did you know they found a new ring around Saturn recently?" It wasn't my intention, I was just repeating new I knew she'd be interested in cause she love astrology, but existential questions fell by the wayside to Saturn's rings and an in depth exploration into the new ring.

I am not complaining. I think this was awesome she had these questions, and brought them to me. But man, I was staring at some C# code wondering how to make my own little cog in the machine of life spin around and I was not mentally prepared for Nihilism from an 8 year old.

Oh wow, I can't wait to get all those questions. Only I'm going to get yelled at by my man for being to direct and cynical with my answers lol.
And congrats on saving all the stuff on your computer. I would have shit myself. That happened to our computer just a month ago...twice...in one week...lol
