Here is how it goes.. I am 20 years old and have been playing live and performing with bands for 16 of those 20 years. I recently had a dry spell where nothing was happening musically. Approximately June 2010 a friend of a friend needed a female singer for a duet and I jumped at the chance to be doing anything. My friend's friend's name is Sky McCullough. At the time he had a disorganized group of musicians that were calling themselves LESS LOVE. Their intention was to record one CD and then part ways.
Initially I wasn't sure what to think of the set up. Sky gets crazy with the crossover, mixing Country/Rock/Grunge/Industrial. It was odd at first, but the more I heard it the more I fell in love with Gruntry music.
Sky introduced me to Billy Groshon: singer for the band Wondernaut. Working on Wondernaut's sophomore effort to follow up their 2006 debut "The Youth Is Wasted" (released on American Laundromat Records), Billy was also helping Sky on the LESS LOVE project.
I am going to back up and restate, I was originally just asked to record a duet. When I met these guys I immediately was impressed that they were doing what they were doing despite the fact that they did not know what they were doing. They had converted an old store space that looked like it needed to be condemned into a recording space. As a refusal to pay high studio fees, Billy had bought a 24-track recorder on ebay and was taking on the role of studio engineer, 100% self taught. I was instantly inspired.
Up to this point it hadn't occurred to me to do it myself. I was raised in the false idea that it was all or nothing: either a million dollar contract or starving artist. I wasn't going to wait any longer for somebody to validate me. I decided to make my own magic, and if all goes well, maybe make some magic for others.
I convinced Wondernaut & LESS LOVE to allow me to release their CDs on my label. Calling the label Lackadaisical Productions (LackPro for shot), I began to rally people I knew to help me where they could. We began to get videos made and a plan of action was in motion. I also convinced Sky to make me a permanent part of LESS LOVE.
This entire effort is a no budget whim. The grass roots endeavor excites me. We are not video producers, studio engineers, advertising agents, managers, or promoters. We have no idea what we are doing.
Our intention is to first release an EP by December 2010 featuring 3 songs by Wondernaut & 3 songs by LESS LOVE. Once those CDs are pressed and ready to release we will go to a fundraising site such as kickstarter.com and attempt to raise money, if that fails a bake sale is always an option. Once we have raised the money needed LackPro will release CDs by both artists around Spring 2011. A promotional tour will be schedule to coincide.
I am also looking to record a singer songwriter from Chicago named Kris Baustert, and in the mean time am looking for other potential artists.
This whole thing could be a childish dream, or it could be a raging success.. Time will tell and hopefully you will stay tuned to find out..
Best Wishes
