I want to say something profound about the Hurricane and the aftermath in New Orleans but I don't think I have anything new to say.
In particular, I hate to comment on the racial overtones because I'm always concerned about Whitey making a case for racism.
I don't think the government delayed because New Orleans was predominantly black. However, I do think that private citizens certainly did. I believe if there had been a sea of white faces that people who owned private bus lines, and trucking companies, and things like that might have gone down to New Orleans on their own and brought people out. But that sea of black faces scared whitey.
Its easy for me to say. After all, I dont own a bus company and Im in New Jersey. I dont know what I would have done if I was in a neighboring state. I dont think I would have rented a truck and headed for the Superdome. I made a donation. Im good like that.
I dont like seeing celebrities going down to New Orleans. Sean Penn has to be king of the douchebags. Faith Hill brought down 3 semis worth of supplies. Sean Penn went out on a boat. Fuck you Sean Penn. Youre not a trained rescue worker. Do you even know CPR, or basic first aid? Youre a fucking nuisance. If youre so gung ho to get involved on a personal level then hire a team of doctors, or a team of white water rafters, or something meaningful and bring them down. Your one man can make a difference bullshit still looks like bullshit to me. Its not effective. It doesnt help. If you saved 40 people on your leaky boat, well then god bless you. but shame on you for making an almost futile gesture when you could clearly make an actual serious difference. You could give a million dollars, or actually pay for food or medical supplies, or something substantial. How about you buy a couple houses fro people, or a couple trailer homes?
Jesus once said (No, not to me. Im crazy but not that crazy) Judge not, lest ye be judged. I think my real anger is not at Sean Penn (love Fast Times at Ridgemont High.) but because you sit and feel powerless. Well I guess everyone just has to do what they can, right? At least Sean Penn did something, right? Plenty of people are doing nothing. Plenty of people are pointing fingers which can probably wait. These people need everything so anything will help.
I cant believe they wouldnt let people take their dogs. I would leave my wife before Id leave my dog. Sorry honey.
