I saw Batman Begins tonight, and it is AWESOME. I don't use that word lightly. I went in with mixed expectations. I love Batman. I read the comics, I watched the old live action tv show, I really liked the first 2 movies. When I saw the 4th movie people were walking out, and I saw it on a plane. (ba dump dump) No seriously I saw it on a plane and it was $5 for headsets, $10 if you didn't want one. (ba dump dump).
Any way, as good as Michael Keaton is as Batman, you don't really get inside his head like this movie. This movie makes Batman work. You really buy it. Oh, and they are not joking around. they playh it absolutely straight. There is a whisper of comic relief with Gary Oldman, but it grows fairly naturally out of the situation, maybe a little forced. And there is the obligatory black guy who sees the bat mobile and says "nice ride, man!" or some other incredibly racist demeaning black guy comment. There's one just like it in the first superman movie but I don't remember exactly what it is.
Other than that the movie is terrific. They make Scarecrow into a decent villain and I never cared for him at all. The guy who plays Scarecrow is terrific , a guy named Cillian Murphy, who was in cold Mountain which I never saw, and girl with Pearl Earring but I don't rmember him from that. Anyway, I hope Willem Dafoe has put some money away because this guy is going to be a HUGE star and take allof those psycho charmer roles. Christian Bale makes me want to go gay except that clearly he would be a top and when I go gay I'm a top. Full Stop. But he's awesome. I remember there being a lot of discussion when the first Batman came out about how Batman is a normal guy, he's not really a big powerful guy, because if he was a big powerfiul guy he wouldn't need the costume. Right. fuck you. Christian Bale is a monster. He would kick Michael Keaton, Val Ki,mer and George Clooney's batmen's asses. He would twist the nipples right off of George Clooney's batsuit. Another nice thing is that all of the big names in the film get a little bit of a workout. too often they stack the deck with big name stars and they simply walk around, or they just pop in and out. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, they all get to do a little acting, each gets a nice moment or two.
I've read complaints that the action scenes are too dark (literally as in you can't see anything) and I disagree. It is clearly done as an effect. It is better than having all of the henchmen patiently wait and attack one at a time. No, apparently Batman can just beat the piss ut of a zillion people at once.
I can't look at Katie Holmes. I was aKatie Holmes fan, but everytime I see her I see Tom Cruise running around on the furniture. Then I see Christian Bale sodomizing him. And not in a loving way like he would do me, if I was gay and if I was a bottom, which I'm not, and I'm not. but really fucking Tom Cruise like he hates him. Like one of those uncomfortable "Oz" moments. But I don't think Christian Bale is gay.
There ar some very minor problems, but if you're going to suspend your disbelief they will not be a problem for you. big thumbs up.
So here are the minor issues.

one of my favorite parts was the katie holmes/christian bale dynamic. some people have complained that this is an "obligatory" love story, but it seemed better handled than in the other "batman" movies. what made it work was that bale is pretty much never really interested - he's batman, and he's dedicated to that. so the love story isn't there just b/c it's required to have a female lead in a big hollywood movie - it works to show us a bit how batman's head works. i liked it.
