I was thinking yesterday, as I was wandering around the fine streets of Montreal that the way we perceive reality is very much like an Archimboldo painting. The big picture world exists, but we don't see it in terms of what it actually is - the best we can do is to piece together a picture out of the constant familiar concepts/images that we have at our fingertips.
As Korzybski would say:
The map is not the territory.
What we perceive is just a fraction of a neverending series of holons.
In a way a man portrayed as a pile of fruit is more true than one that looks real - as he is assembled through artifice - pigments, brush, and canvas - he is not real in the slightest, but merely an elegant act of sleight of hand.
So next time when you're out on a walk on a nice summer day think of Archimboldo, and remember you're not seeing reality at all, but merely an artfully arranged pile of fruit.
But that's nice too.
