The other day Pygmy and I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. It was free.
Yayoi Kusama's been around for awhile and she does these (usually) large installation with soft shapes and polka dots and mirrors and such. I thought her mirrored rooms were kind of fun, but generally it just reminded me of how I've come to loathe most of modern art and why I couldn't bear to go a do a MA of Art History.
When most of the exhibits in a Museum make you just want to say "shut the fuck up" it's not necessarily a good experience. Perhaps I like older stuff because it's more understandable within a historical context, but really most of the things in the exhibit are just shitty conceptual art. And I like some conceptual art.
I prefer the bullshit of hardcore to the bullshit of the 80s art boom.

every art museum I've ever stepped into. To ME, the biggest drag is going through the
areas of the National Gallery Of Art where it's just.... a bunch of 18th century gentry
standing out on a hill, portrait after portrait of these rich idiots in their powdered wigs
by a tree on their ill-gotten or birth-entitled estate. I'll take a Brillo pad box over that
anyday... but I agree with the first poster, monochromatic-canvas minimalism sucks.
I'm not very big on Abstract Expressionism either; give me SOMETHING to go on. A
mess of paint splotching does not compute emotionally.
