Wow, I just got whacked in the face with the nastiest sickness I've ever had. My sincerest hopes to everyone I saw this weekend that I didn't infect any of you with it. I'm pretty sure it was the flu, but damn, I had no idea the flu could be that bad.
I wrote a journal entry last year (at Minty's request, for those of you who remember her) about flu epidemics and avian flus so I won't rehash that. Suffice to say - we're all screwed. Barring some major immunological advancement that hasn't been forthcoming, at some indeterminate point in the future (a nearer and nearer future) one of these bird flus will succesfully make the leap to humans in a form that is directly communicable to other humans. When that happens - back the fuck up. We're talking 5-10% of the world's population dead in one fell swoop. Whoops! I'm not looking forward to that.
Aside from irritating technical problems in the lab, z minor victory where I won a small texas hold 'em tournament and nights spent drinking with my friends in the city there hasn't been a whole lot else going on in my life. I'll be talking more and more about electoral politics in the leadoff to the presidential election but I figured I would leave this entry politics-free.
In that spirit, I'm entertaining suggestions as to what my next entry should be about. I'll try and do another biology related one that's relatively accessible. Your suggestion should be specific, otherwise it's going to be impossible for me to write anything meaningful on the subject.
Hope you all had a good weekend.
