Well, it's been a few days since I last updated my journal. Friday was a lot of fun, I had a slow day at work so I took everyone's suggestion and decided to apply for the editor position here. Here's the paragraph that I submitted:
Bush "Missile Umbrella" Neglects the Fact that it's not Raining
Today the Bush administration announced its intentions to seek an additional $1.2 billion for it's proposed "missile defense shield" program, bringing the total spending in 2004 up to a
staggering $10.2 billion. This increase would come in spite of doubts about the program's viability, its potential violation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty, and the fact that terrorists or rogue states may find easy ways to slip by it.
Given the president's firm commitment in his State of the Union address to cut the federal deficit in half in the next five years, one has to wonder how he can justify spending an additional billion dollars on a program that may never work against an attack that may never come.
(Edit: formatting and links didn't transfer so well to my journal. But you get the gist of it.)
Afterwards I was fortunate enough to have a friend call me and give me two tickets to the Rangers hockey game (he has season tickets and couldn't go.) So I called up my friend David and we went down to watch the game. While it was a crappy game, and the Rangers ended up losing, by far the most amusing part was watching the fans. Especially this really loud, obnoxious drunk guy sitting right behind, who would alternate between yelling about how the Rangers sucked, and then as soon as they got the puck would offer up such useful advice as "Skate!" Not to mention listening to him try to sing along with "Blitzkrieg Bop" when they started playing it. Hilarity.
Yesterday was much fun. I ended up being the first one to show up at SGNY "slobberknocking," (I guess people just don't like drink in the afternoon ). I hung up for a while and had a few beers, watching Battle Royale 2 on the TV at the bar, graciously provided by Waxangel. Then people started showing up, and things predictably got more raucous and crazy. I've got to say, every time I go to an SGNY event I have a better time. I got a chance to talk to a lot of people who I knew from just their screennames, as well as some other folks who are looking to join the group. And I had my butt relentlessly pinched by Tori.
Afterwards we left Ace to go to a different bar, and I was starting to feel pretty drunk. I had already made plans to meet up with some other folks for the evening, so I stuck around for one beer and then left the party. I was sorry to go, but I was getting to the point where I was mangling inappropriate jokes, so it was probably for the best.
I met up with some other friends and we hung out, drinking and smoking pot at a friend's place, which was pretty chill.
When I came home I was pleased to see that I had gotten an e-mail from Sean. Apparently out of the 500+ people who applied for the editor position, I'm one of the 25 members who made it to the second round. I now have to submit another five pieces for review, and then they'll make their final decision. Which is pretty cool, I have to say. I'm glad to see the management here is open minded, as I was honest that I have no training or experience in editorial journalism.
Anyway, today I'm planning on relaxing, not watching any football (I'm protesting the censoring of moveon.org) and getting those few pieces written.
I hope everybody else had a great weekend, and that everyone in SGNY is recovering from yesterday's festivities.
