ok SO!
as i mentioned briefly in the last blog, i got engaged on Friday night ... heres how it went down!
ok, so, on thursday i went out and got the ring, i went with my parents because they wanted to be a part of it all, and it turned out being a really cool experience, we were at Tiffany & Co, and once i picked the ring we were ushered into a little room and given champagne while they polished up and packaged the ring. we got lucky too, because the general manager of Tiffany & Co Australia was there and he came and congratulated me, we chatted with him for awhile and it was pretty sweet.
SO i had the ring, at the back of my wardrobe, my plan was to wait until this sunday, we have tickets to see 'chicago' and i was going to do it after the show, but after one totally sleepless night i decided waiting over a week would kill me, so i decided to do it on friday, which meant tracking down her parents to get their blessing, i called her mum and asked her over the phone, (she was thrilled) then after work i went to the bowls club where her dad was, pulled him aside and asked him, SO friggin scary! but he said he was happy so i rushed home to prepare.
SO i cleanup up the upstairs living room at my place, and scattered 200 tea light candles around the room, on everything, and around the floor (more on that later!) i then opened the front door downstairs and left a trail of candles up the hallway, leading to the stairs, and changed into a suit
THEN i waited ... of course on the day i planned to propose was the day that Nic was running late for the first time ... ever, I was stressing so much that the candles werent gonna last, a couple burnt out but i managed to replace them with backup candles, i spent about an hour alternating between checking i wasnt burning the house down and staring out the window... as soon as i saw headlights on the road i sprung into action, turned off the TV and all the lights and waited for her to come in, i heard her open the door and head towards the stairs, as she did i turned up the music, a String quartet cover of 'i dont wanna miss a thing' by aerosmith, followed by 'god only knows' by the beach boys.
so the music was playing, i was standing in the middle of the circle of candles with the ring box behind my back, Nic got to the top of the stairs and stopped dead, i told her to come over and she was crying by the time she reached me, i had a speech planned in my head but i was so bloody nervous my mind was totally blank by the time it came for me to speak, so i got on one knee and asked her to marry me ...
you know the rest!
oh and PS.... if you are going to scatter candles all over the floor, you will be spending a majority of the next day trying to get candle wax out of the carpet! a handy hint - put a paper towel over the wax spot then iron it with a hot iron, the iron will melt the wax and the towel soaks it up out of the carpet!
some photos ...
The hallway leading upstairs ...
What was waiting at the top of the stairs ...
My puppy dog, who was none too happy about being left outside while this was going on, she thanked me by jumping up and stomping me right in the crotch as soon as i let her back in
And finally, the ring that will be keeping me poor for many years to come, on the finger of my fiancee
