Made it to Alaska in one piece, thoroughly enjoyed the drive up (again) -- though doing the whole trip (over 4000 miles) in five and half days was a bit grueling. Only really sporty day was 17 hours of driving from Ft. Nelson (Yukon Territory, I think) all the way to the border and on to Tok, Alaska. Weather wasn't too bad -- there was some snow crossing the Rockies and once I got into Alaska, but nothing too impressive.

Random shots from the drive, including the world's biggest beaver.

Not much to do now that I'm here for the next while -- I'm basically on an extended vacation until the beginning of December when I start the new job. Apparently I beat the first snow into Anchorage by about 24 hours.

But there's not a whole lot of accumulation on the ground yet, so I'm kind of stuck between hiking weather and cross country skiing or snowshoeing weather at the moment. The Girlfriend and I belong to a pretty good gym up here, though (the state-spanning Alaska Club), so there's at least that until we get enough snow for me to try to remember how to ski.

Weather was pretty nice today, so I snapped a couple pictures of the view from my living room.

Think I'm adapting pretty well to the post-military existence so far, looking forward to keeping my shooting skills sharp. Also waiting on some of my rifles and all my handguns to get shipped here. Damn Canadian gun laws make it a bit tricky to haul a tough box full of handguns or assault rifles up here by yourself. So far everything has made it one piece, though, except for a USGI 30 round magazine for my M1 carbine that was smashed flat (on reflection, packing it loose in a box with a carbine and a Garand was probably a bad idea on my part). Hopefully my luck will hold. I need to find a 'Guard unit up here to run out my 10 month commitment as a weekend warrior, but after six years of full-time military fun and games I'm not feeling a real sense of urgency on that just at the moment.
