Actually, last minute passports are hella easy. If you've got tickets and are within 14 days of flying, you can go into the regional passport office in Denver as a walk-in and they'll print you one on the spot. Costs a chunk of change though. I found this out the hard way from putting off getting mine for a trip to mexico until the last minute.
