This is a dorky rant.
Ok. Pretend you are as big of a video game dork as I am. I know that'll be hard for a few of you, but bear with me for the sake of argument, or just skip this entry.
Final Fantasy XI (my first and only online RPG) and many other online games have people in them that like to dominate the hot spots and take all the money and expensive goods/ores/items what have you (I don't much care for that but read on to see how it can balance out). Then these guys form a small online business that quickly explodes. I applaud them for this genius. Basically, all you do is charge real life money for in game currency. This is generally frowned upon by the game creators, but hasn't been 100% outlawed just yet.
Gil is the name of the currency in FF XI. At lower levels, or just trying to be tough in general (up to date equipment and items), it can be difficult to obtain gil without wasting hours and hours (more) of your life farming hot spots for goods and items worth selling to the public in the local Auction Houses of the game world. I'm slowly growing tired of this, but it is a necessary and sometimes interesting practice (growing more and more rare by the day however).
As of late though, in real life, money issues are haunting enough. I know myself and many others don't really want to waste time and stress on fake currency. Not to say I condone the gil selling and farming practices, but there is one thing that gets on my nerves. People that don't understand why us dorks are doing this. Where the appeal lies in spending your hard earned cash on in-game currencies is beyond some people.
They claim people have no value of money, and that it's a colossal waste of funding that could go towards many things in real life. I agree, but am on the fence to a certain extent, offended even. It's 12 bucks to purchase 200,000 gil. It's 30 bucks for 500,000 gil. It goes on from there, up to nearly 300 real life bucks for however many millions of gil. Now, people also sell their powerful characters for upwards of 1000 REAL dollars. Now that, I find ridiculous and unfair. Also just plain stupid, because the fun of a game is raising the character's power and making friends in the groups you meet. Seeing the world and killing the creatures and growing in power is the reason to play for most people. So why buy a powerful character and have your inexperience kill your group off near the ending of the game? Yet, I digress, it's only my opinion.
But to spend merely 24 dollars on nearly half a million in game currency sounds good to me. It's MY money to do with what I please. I normally spend up to 50 bucks on brand new games (finished within a month and replayed rarely mind you), so what difference is it? If I were a NOPI guy and wanted to drop 2.5k on some tires that are basically just as good as Wal-Mart brand tires, would I be messed with and ridiculed then? Would people call me stupid? Of course. Everyone has their preference. Everyone has their hobbies that interest them. Guns, knives, ammo, etc. Very expensive. So what's so wrong with that?
And what I really hate is, after making aforementioned arguments, a look of realization crosses the opposition's eyes. I KNOW they realize I've made some form of sense. They realize what I'm saying is correct for some people, and it's all a matter of opinion. And yet, they instantly realize what I've seen in them, and make another stupid, pointless statement in defense of themselves, completely off subject. When I'm wrong, or at least said something stupid, I'll admit it. Even if it humbles the hell outta me I will. I HATE people that can't do that. What the hell is wrong with everyone?!
Of course, I'm having a bit of a bad day as it is, but really, c'mon. What is the need to insult a human being for their practices? What point does it prove? Wow, I could sure spend that 20 bucks better than you could in my opinion! Well, good for you!!!! Go take a flying fuck while you're at it!! I don't give a shit!!!!
End dorky rant.
