so i've been to the burn six years now. wow - it's kind of scary to really acknowledge that, in some ways. it seems like every year, my commitment to the community and its mission is strengthened. and it is wonderful to see that it has stirred up something strong in you.
i'll tell you a little story. the first time i went in 1999, i didn't expect the experience to change my life. i went because i felt i had to go, not because i wanted to, basically. my experience, though, built up pretty powerfully all the way up to the night of the burn, and i can still remember seeing this little spark in the man where the heart would be, and i felt as if i was looking into a mirror that reflected my soul, and my deepest wishes. i understood that that effigy was all of us, and what we thought were once our liabilities may just be our greatest strengths.
i don't know how you interpreted it, but it sounds to me like you had a pretty powerful experience there. so just know that from here on in, no matter how difficult readjusting to the rest of the world may be, you didn't leave the playa empty-handed. you now have us, this invisible force that now bonds us all together. and that's what remains.
*&*&&*
okay, in other words, how grand that you're a writer, too! i've done the freelance journo thing - have written for NY Post, LA Times, High Times, scads of alt-weeklies all over the country. we'll have to trade war stories together one day.
and yes, i did see your li'l pin-up photos. damned handsome lady, you are, i must say. hope you get your set up one a'these days. have you heard back from missy or sean yet?
okay, back to this john trudell lecture i've only been half-listening to as i've been typing this to you. long may we burn.
p.s.that giant flower you saw on the playa was made by my neighbor (and roommate of pearl), patrick "eleven" shearn. i actually helped make that thing, but even i didn't know it was gonna come together like that.
ya know, it's kinda funny how things like this work, but as luck may have it, my account is about to end on Sept. 29th, and I'm not gonna renew my membership. i will be happy to discuss the details with you offsite, but let's just say that after two years, you find out a lot about the institution that is SG that you wish you didn't. suffice it to say that when you look closer, the empowering, femalecentric, grrl-power brand that SG sells to the outside world is a bald-faced lie, and i would not recommend becoming an SG to any self-respecting woman i know.
i'm sure you're used to this sort of thing as a pro model, but still, you should know a bit more about what you're getting into, and at least try to keep this site and its petty politics at arm's length if you become an SG anyway (and that's harder than you might think at this point. this whole place is designed to fuck with your head.). in the meantime, at least we have met, and i can get in touch with you through your personal website. so that i shall.
oh, also, after reading your stuff, i couldn't help but think of an old friend of mine from college named shana ting lipton, who sort of prowls a similiar beat here in LA. i figured i'd hip you into her.
