Feeling philosophical today.

A friend of mine and I were discussing plans to mind-fuck this guy who has not only wronged me and my friend, but many other people we know, in various ways. She made some comment about how we were evil, then said, "But I figure it isn't evil if you're enjoying yourself." She meant it in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, of course, and I laughed, because it was a totally "her" kind of statement.

But it makes you think. What is evil to me might not be evil to you, because you enjoy it...and vice versa.

If I were to go out right now and find some cute girl and have sex with her, I would enjoy it. But a LOT of people would think I was evil for doing it. If I were to go out right now and find a cute boy and have sex with him, I'd enjoy it. That sort of thing...promiscuous hetero sex...is a lot more common these days, but still, a lot of people would think I was evil for doing it.

Or a more extreme example. Say there was someone who had severely abused someone I cared about, so I went and killed him. If I were the sort to do that, I'd likely enjoy doing it, because of the retribution aspect. But killing people is evil. Unless we're talking about state-sanctioned executions. So is killing evil in all situations?

Sure. These are all extreme examples. But my grandmother once told me with a straight face that people who drive over the speed limit are evil because it is a sin to break the law, and my grandfather refuses to even eat at a place which sells alcohol because he thinks drinking is so evil that he cannot even tacitly support it.

It's a thorny issue, and makes me wish I had studied philosophy in college. Only answer I can come up with right now is that it's all relative.

On a lighter note, I like squirrels.

You like squirrels too?? Damn, we've got a lot in common!! Sure, I think I can handle the friendship request. It's more fun to interact with local peeps. More to talk about. Although I thought that's what the Chicago Group was for. Evidently, they don't return requests. I e-mailed them a week and a half ago and haven't heard anything. Hmmm... Maybe they're too good for us. whatever
