I saw a bird on the sidewalk
looking up at me with her pale, shallow, lifeless eyes
I couldn't help but wonder what broke her fragile neck
the bones of the bird were hollow and light
Easy to break-- like the heart of a child
I suppose they still are
I kept looking behind me as I walked
Unable to simply forget
the creature now forever flightless
I couldn't help but wonder what she was breaking her neck to see.
