I'm one of the few people I know that can hear all the spoilers about a movie and still want to see it. Last night I rented High Tension. If you plan on seeing it or you don't want to read about a horror movie then skip the rest.
The thing I liked the most about High Tension was it's mix between gore you see and gore you imagine. That and the great pacing and sort of oh shit! oh shit! suspense building. There are points of shocking gore, for example a deep throat cut, but you get it through a point of view that makes it less gratuitous, more real to the moment, therefore scarier.
On the cover of the dvd is a woman holding a concrete saw. At least I think that's what it is. There's a scene where that saw is shoved through the windshield of a good samaritan would be rescuer and I'd imagine in to his head and torso. The windshield pops like a balloon when the saw hit's it. The shot that you get is the woman that's trying to escape, who is sitting directly behind the driver. It's a close up of her screaming and blood spraying on her face. I think that most directors would have chosen to show the guy being killed or at least parts of it editing in and back to face etc. It's a much gorier version of the scene in Scarface with the chainsaw.
I haven't watched a horror movie in like forever. Dave and I saw the Dawn of the Dead remake when it came out and I think that was the most recent on I saw. High Tension is filled with horror movie cliches and stereotypes but it manages to put a fresh face on them for the most part. It has a certain style to it that makes the old new again. If you want to read a good synopsis of the film without having to see it or any film for that matter look it up on wikipedia. If you want a decent scare I say rent it.
Also this morning at Hawthorne and around 16th there was a living room, complete with big screen tv, set up on some dude's lawn. There was a guy passed out on the couch and there was another couch but I couldn't see it there was somebody on it. I'm totally kicking myself for not taking a picture of it. I was running late. But I'm going back at lunchtime and if anything is still there I'll shoot it. *Finger's crossed* pics to come.
