This is just a brief extract from a longer entry I'll write in my other English blog tonight http://magasotowords.wordpress.com
FROM THE BASEMENT
I am going to be recommending some of my favorite live performances shown in the project From the Basement, by the producer Nigel Godrich. It's really inspiring to see this and to know that it exists. I just watched some of the performances for the third time and got more carried away than the previous ones. It really is a unique experience.
Radiohead - All I Need
I couldn't really say that this is my favorite Radiohead song cause I don't think I have a favorite anymore. Every time I listen to them, mostly to their album In Rainbows, I reaffirm my absolute amazement with them. That album is freaking insane. I like every part of it. It's one of those cds that have grown on me very slowly. I heard it once, twice, three times and without thinking about it I feel like it's in my Top 5. I never got into Radiohead before listening to this just because the only thing I knew about them back in Spain is that people loved Creep, and I never thought that song was amazing. I did get into OK Computer and it lasted me a little over 6 months, but then I saw myself without ever listening to it again until just now. The passion I've developed for In Rainbows is what makes me be sure I am really into them. They totally killed me with this performances too. You can see all the videos and read about the project on the website.
PJ Harvey - The Devil
After watching it again today, I have to say I'm positively surprised by PJ Harvey's participation on these videos. I'm not very into her, I've always found her slightly annoying and just uninspiring. I don't actually like her facial expressions in this performance either. She seems kind of indifferent when she finishes. However, I did like the couple of songs she plays. I am still not eager to listen to a whole album of her, but I might be happy to get fair prized tickets to a show.
Damien Rice - Delicate
What can I say? I just fell in love with his live interpretation. This is beautiful and wonderful. He stays the whole show sitting down like that except for when he plays the piano. He recorded this whole album in his living room. I just discovered him with this series of performances. It's now time to get obsessed with it. The lyrics are beautiful, but not necessarily special. They just feel perfectly right for what he creates and how he creates it. It really is a great combination with his voice and the innocence and tenderness of his face. His performance today was breathtaking.
We might kiss when we are alone
When nobody's watching
We might take it home
We might make out when nobody's there
It's not that we're scared
It's just that it's delicate
Damien Rice - From the Basement
Thom Yorke, Jose Gonzalez, Andrew Bird, Gnarls Barkley are other artists I wanted to recommend videos about. But just wait until I upload the extension of this entry into my blog.
There are different cinematographers shooting these videos, but they definitely have a similar idea on putting together this project. The camera work in this is really good. It's not only wonderful to hear it, but also to sit down and watch the artists you are interested in all the way through. With PJ Harvey it does an interesting introduction, for example. Or they really know how to use the shallow DOP to focus on the facial expressions of the musicians. This project is a combination between the raw live performance and its personal feeling and the cinematography. The shots serve its purpose very well.
