Best wishes and hope to all suffering on the gulf coast right now.
Don't care what anybody (government or media) says:
They knew Katrina was heading towards this area, regardless of whether it veered at the last moment.
They knew New Orleans was below the surrounding water levels and used levies to hold back that water.
They knew the hardest hit would be the poor, who didn't have the resources to leave the area like others.
They've been claiming since 9/11 that the 3 levels of government (federal, state, local) were preparing for major catastrophes like 9/11 and the results of this, though natural in cause, fall under that umbrella
What really bugs me:
Saying "we didn't know the levies were going to break or the storm would be so bad".
Taking 5 days to show any real movement to help these people.
As a viewer on CNN said "They can move an entire army across the world and control a whole country but they can't drop water bottles and sandwiches in the middle of a major american city".
The mayor of N.O. is pleading saying they are out of options, supplies and security, but everyone else is saying be patient.
Congress convened in one evening - while on vacation - to address removing a feeding tube from a woman in florida, but take 5-6 days to convene for a major incident that affects thousands of lives and kills hundreds of people.
Listening to the people in charge saying they are doing everything they can - bullshit - thousands of people in concentrated areas like the superdome or the convention centre are starving and dying of thirst; maybe there are issues getting buses there, but they can't get food or water in by air? They can't get triage medical people in to take care of people on site?
Regular people are getting around to scavenge and loot without special equipment or vehicles, so what does that say about the heavily equipped FEMA and other official organizations.
Listening to officials say that things are under way, that there are tough issues to deal with, that we just don't understand, that people need to be patient - forget it, excuses, excuses; the self-proclaimed greatest nation on earth has taken 5 days to get basic needs to dying people in a major city and surrounding areas. DYING PEOPLE.
This should be an unprecedented embarrassment to the american government, showing that their claims of protecting the american people and making the country safer are complete crap. This should have been more organized. They should have been better prepared. They may not have known the details or the exact location of the major destruction, but they should have had a more efficient system in place. Period. It will be spun in a hundred different directions and the government will likely come out as heroes in the end, but this is a travesty.

My mum is hurt right now understandably - but more so angry...
If you could understand the way that their relationship worked - a lot of the conflict came from his daughter...who at 13 had daddy wrapped around her little finger and who demands respect but gives none in return. I could go on and on about her....she's going to be an out of control teen once high school comes around.
I'm angry too - I'm angry that he's so fucking spineless and he made so many promises to my mother - and then...bails.
Blah.
