We had a late start on the evening, arriving at about six o'clock or so. Derik was unable to attend so that left Kevin and Jesse to pick up the slack. The set up began as usual, but was quickly interrupted by an elderly man complaining about people being on his property. He asked a couple if they could read and pointed out two NO TRESPASSING signs he had posted. Jesse asked what the trouble was before a confrontation broke out. The man appeared to be nervous and spoke quickly. He said his name was Michael Gard, that he was the owner of this property, and that if everyone didn't leave he would be back with the police. His excuse for his intolerant behavior was that he was forced to pay a crew $100 to clean up the trash from his small bit of land, yet it was riddled with litter. Jesse's replay was, "I'll clean it up for free, at the end of the night". Gard simply shook his head and walked away reminding those in the vicinity that he would, "return with police". As quickly as everyone had set up their things, they took it all down and attempted to find some 'free' space in the surrounding area. Kevin and Jesse were fortunate enough to discover a sliver of room between a kind lady selling magnets and their friend Brent who makes urbanistic paintings using construction materials. It wasn't much but it worked out well enough and when 'later' came, the police did not. Late comers set up in the vacated area and everybody had a great time with out further disturbance.
As the evening pressed forward, the vibes of hostility faded away with the intrigue of Art Walkers. The sound of the voices and presence of hungry minds re-established the mood of the night. Both Kevin and Jesse had new work to show and received a slue of positive comments. Kevin's piece signified the end of his pink, black and gray series while Jesse's signified the beginning a new, experimental style using wood stain. The presentation overall had the feeling of something different and the reaction was well received. The traditions played true as always, the Hare Krishna's sang, someone went the wrong way down 3rd Street, and the interesting person of the evening made their appearance. The person just so happened to be the model for a life drawing that had been selected and displayed in the Spring '07 Paradise Valley Community College Student Art show that was hosted by both Jesse and Kevin. However, the afternoon before the show, the piece had been vandalized by an unknown individual who used a black marker to write the words "Breasts", "Penis", and "Vagina" on the drawing. Thankfully it turned out to be the artist but sadly the work had to be removed from the show because it was not that same piece that had been juried and accepted in to the show originally. So, now there was a face to put to the words.
The night ended at eleven o'clock on the dot and the breakdown went smoothly. Overall it ended up being a pretty good night for those who came. The Enlightened Art Crew will be back for more next month with some new work and hopefully some good stories. Jesse will not be showing at the July Art Walk but should back in August. See you there!
