I should be reading for my Japanese pop culture class or for my Shakespeare class, but I am not (obviously). I find myself writing here most often when I should be doing something else. Instead of reading for class I am reading the newspaper, watching Miami Ink and eating some fish sticks. Oh, and typing this haha
I was just reading about skinny models in the news paper. The article was talking about changes being made after the Brazilian model died in november. Then the article went on to talk about this campaign by ABC (ugly Betty) to promote self-esteem in young girls. The campaign is called Be Ugly 07. It is encouraging girls to "be real, be smart, be passionate, be true to yourself and be ugly." I think this is a little strange personally. I think they are seeking to change the idea of beauty in our society or encourage girls to reject the beauty ideals. While I think perhaps they have good intentions, I don't really know that they are going about it in the right way. "Ugly" is still a reference to beauty. I think it is more important to stress other aspects of a person rather than their outward appearance. By saying "be ugly" I think that is still placing the focus on the physical. Not to mention, who is going to want to "be ugly"?
I found this article about the Be Ugly 07 campaign. I agree with the last paragraph that talking about the "average" or "ugly" women in Hollywood that are in fact not ugly at all. The "curvy" women in hollywood are still thinner than most women. Anyway, the headache I have right now is preventing me from writing very coherently. I will perhaps readdress this subject at a later time as it has a lot to do with thing I've recently studied in my women's studies classes.
Bleh. I am still really sick and it's bummin' me out. I hate feeling cruddy all the time. I need to get things done, but I don't really feel well enough to do them. My room is scary messy right now, but my head hurts and my body aches so I don't feel very motivated to clean it up. I also want to clean the bathroom (cuz none of my other roomies do).
Speaking of roomies, there are some changes happening chez moi. Ems is moving out because she is pregnant and now married. The rest of us are now trying to figure out what to do. Rent is expensive already so we need a new roomie or we need to move. Lauren and I want to move out, but are unsure if that is really a good thing to do as it would leave the other two roomies high and dry. My love, Jean-Marc, will be moving back to CA (out of the army!!!) on Feb 16th so I will need to figure out where he is going to live. I think he is planning to live with me, but I think he won't want to move in until at least a week or two after he gets back to the states. Anyway, I need to sit down with all the roomies and figure out what to do. Bleh. I dun wanna.
Oh! It is now time for Beauty and the Geek! Lauren and I have recently got hooked on the show. I guess it is a guilty pleaseure. Whatevs. Ima go watch it.
Here is a pic of my sista and I cuz we are cool kids.
cheers

oh and i SWORE i wouldn't watch beauty and the geek... when they were hyping it up in commercials i was like 'fuck that show!' but then, when there was nothing else on and i stopped on it for a second... i realized it's actually watchable. sadly it's probably what i most look forward to on tv these days, but that's just cause there is nothing else on!
I don't know how we got hooked on Beauty and the Geek, but now I can't stop watching it! I should get a hobby and turn off the tv i guess hehe
