My first job was in a local family owned salon. It was way before I was a licensed cosmetologist, it was actually the first year of my cosmetology school. I obviously was not allowed to do most services so what I did do was wash clients hair, book appointments, sweep hair, mix color/chemicals, wash laundry and clean up around the salon/take the trash out. Every now and then my boss would let me finish doing foil highlights. I loved the job, but not my boss or her sister, the ones that weren't related to them I loved, they were two older women who just loved life and were hilarious. My boss was okay at first but then her sister and her both tried to teach me to do things differently to their standards, so when one seen me doing something the other taught me I got bitched at, this happened a lot. The boss's daughter who was 15 at the time ( I was 16) was also working the same job I was, I was told she didn't want to do it anymore so she was going to teach me then find a new job. Then she got off on having authority over me and turned into her mom and aunt. I ended up having to call off one day ( I was there for about 3 months) because we had a blizzard and I couldn't get out of the driveway, the salon had also ended up closing that day. The next day I worked I went in and was fired because I called off, meaning the one and only time I had ever called off, on the day they had to close the salon. I was pissed. I haven't really had a job since.

Wow! That really sucks! My brother was a professionally trained hair stylist at Toni & Guy. He finished his training and has since moved around a fair bit between salons. He has dyspraxia but some how it doesn’t affect, if anything he seems more dextrose. Anyway some of his methods didn’t go down well in some of the smaller salons, they don’t like the way he uses foils or the way he dries hair etc etc. I think they resent his training and feel compelled to criticise him constantly. As such he never lasts long in each job

That’s a shame! I’m now professionally licensed in cosmetology but all the salons near me I don’t really care for anyone who owns or works in them, so I haven’t bothered applying to them knowing that it wouldn’t go well anyways. The cosmetology career is such a beautiful thing but honestly so hard to find people who care about their job and not using people as door mats. I wish him luck 💚
