This year on September 11th I did what I imagine most Americans did I reflected on what a sad day that was and on the sad days that have followed because of it. The best thing about September 11th to me was how Americans stopped being self centered for a little while and treated each other with more love and respect that all human beings deserve. Then we went back to our usual pompous ways.
Anyway this year one of my students told me he was Muslim and how he had sweets in his bag to eat when the sun went down. He had been fasting all day. I am fascinated by to hear about religions and learn how they are different from mine. I thought it was ironic to make this discovery about him on Sept. 11th and I am honored to have the opportunity to do so. Maybe I was able to stop being self centered for a little while and love another human being, just because he is another human being.
