In other sad sad news... Winter has finally decided to take a shit on Chicago. It had been warm up til last week and then within a day went from 40 to less then 20 and I woke up this morning to about a inch of snow everywhere. The first snow of the year. BLAH! I do not know why I hate something so beautiful. It really is pretty... I just hate hate hate being cold. My body cant handle it. I wish I could hybernate like bears for the winter and wake up refreshed at the first site of warmth and sunlight.

SNOW TRIVIA:
~Snowflakes start as ice crystals that are the size of a speck of dust. When the crystals fall they join up with other crystals to form a snowflake. The size of the snowflake depends on how many crystals hook together. Snowflakes usually have six sides. Here are the different kinds of snowflake shapes.

~Snow is technically a mineral, like iron and salt.
~Most snow crystals - the prettier ones - are very wide but very thin. Though they're thinner than a piece of paper, they may be up to a few inches wide. The Guinness Book of Records lists the largest snowflake at 15 inches across, a record held in Keogh, Montana, USA, since 1887.
~At the centre of each snowflake is a speck of dust, volcanic ash or particle from outer space. Temperature, humidity and wind determine the shape each crystal takes as water vapour freezes on it.
~Newly fallen snow is usually about 90 - 95 percent air, which explains its property as a good thermal insulator.
~The most snow in the USA usually falls on Valdez, Alaska. It receives an average of 326 inches of it per year. Never mind that it's 27 feet of snow, that would turn into 2.7 feet deep of water over everything in the area if it all melted at once. Because of the air within it, snow takes up ten times as much space as liquid water.
~The snow in Antarctica is mostly so hard and flat that it reflects sound as well as light. Researchers have heard human voices talking as much as one mile (1.6 km) away.

~Believe it or not, snow is actually clear/transparent. Snow appears white because the crystals act as prisms, breaking up the light of the sun into the entire spectrum of color. The human eye is unable to handle that kind of sensory overload. Therefore, we see the snow as white or sometimes blue. The color of snow can depend on the environment in which you live. Some snowflakes look like they are pink. If you live in a place where your soil is red, snow is pink. The red dust blows into the clouds, discoloring the snow.
~Scientists think that there are five different shapes of snow crystals. A long needle shape, hollow column that is shaped like a six-sided prism, thin and flat six-sided plates, six-pointed stars and intricate dendrites.
~The shape that a snow crystal will take depends on the temperature at which it was formed. When the temperature is around 32F to 25F thin six-sides plates are formed. At 25F to 21F long needle shapes are formed. At 21F to 14F hallow columns are formed. At 14F to 10F six-point stars are formed. At 10F to 3F dendrites are formed. The colder it is outside, the smaller the snowflakes that fall. The fluffiest snow falls at temperatures around 15F.

~he largest piece of ice to fall to earth was an ice block 6 meters (20 ft) across that fell in Scotland on 13 August 1849.
~he largest hailstone recorded fell on 14 April 1986 in Bangladesh weighing 1kg (2.25lbs). The hailstorm reportedly killed 92 people.
~Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the only permanent snowcap within sight of the equator.
~Permanent snow and ice cover about 12% (21 million square km's) of the Earth's land surface. 80% of the world's fresh water is locked up as ice or snow.
~A single snowstorm can drop 40 million tons of snow, carrying the energy equivalent to 120 atom bombs.
~There is NOT a law of nature that prohibits 2 snowflakes from being identical.
~Denver CO received 9.6 inches of snow. October of that year proved to be the coldest and snowiest of record for Denver, with a total snowfall for the month of 31.2 inches.
~Light snow falls in Canberra during most years, but it rarely accumulates to more than a few centimeters.
~In Australia, snowfalls are common above 1,500m in the Alps during the winter, but there are no permanent snowfields anywhere on the continent.
~Denver CO was buried under 21.3 inches of snow, 19.4 inches of which fell in 24 hours. The heavy wet snow snapped trees and wires causing seven million dollars damage.
~Parts of Michigan and Wisconsin experienced their first freeze of the autumn. Snow and sleet were reported in the Sheffield and Sutton areas of northeastern Vermont at midday.
~The most snow produced in a single snowstorm is 4.8 meters (15.75ft) at Mt Shasta Ski Bowl, California (USA) between 13 and 19 February 1959.

winter has decided to grace Boston with its presence as well. Winters in Boston are usually pretty brutal. To think, just last week it was 70 degrees out. I hope it's a quick and painless one. Everyone on the roads act like they've never seen precipitation, and it becomes a clusterfuck of retahhds on the road.
Anyway, that was my rant.
