Chinese New Year's is coming to a close. I wrote a drunken rant on the first night about foreigners in Beijing bashing China, which I decided was too incomprehensible to post. Basic content: I'm not saying the China's a perfect country or that the Chinese government is anything but dictatorial. That being said, what the New York Times reports is 10% of the reality of this place. Expats here usually whine about two things: 1) the Chinese government shits all over 1 billion people's human rights, and 2) China is dirty. These sort of conversations always seem to talk about genocide one moment and the dirt in their beer glass the next, and that always rings a little like colonial privilege and ignorance. Rant done.
I won't be around for the final day of Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival. Tomorrow I'm leaving for Berlin for the Film Fest. The trip would be wonderful except for the fact that I'm going to have to suck my boss' metaphorical dick the whole time.
I uploaded some photos of New Year's for everyone to gander at. Not too happy with how they came out, but hey...

Thanks for posting those photos, it may seem silly, but I always appreciate getting to have a sense of the experiences like that which I've missed.
