Have I ever mentioned that I hate doctors? I'm sure I have.
So......my OBGYN gave me an ultimatum today. She said either I was going to go on Metformin (a type II diabetes medication) or she would no longer see me. So Steven and I walked out.
Here was her reasoning. Some of my postprandial (blood sugar count after 2 hours of eating) is above 120.
No duh women, I have type II diabetes. My postprandial blood sugar (on the high end) usually goes from 119-130. These are GOOD numbers considering. My fasting is always well with in range, I have a preexisting condition, and I'm 22 weeks pregnant. Not to mention my AC1 Lab (glucose saturation of the hemoglobin) came back normal.
She admittedly said that I was her first patient she had with a preexisting blood sugar problem before pregnancy and that she didn't know much about diabetes period. Hell, I had to help her write the 'script' for additional blood test strips. She didn't even know I could get them at the pharmacy (she thought I had to order them).
I tried to explain to her that there is a different "normal" blood sugar range for someone with a preexisting condition going into pregnancy vs someone without one. Basically I told her that she was slightly over reacting UNDERSTANDABLY because she's not familiar with my condition and that I would be more then willing to be medicated once my condition actually called for it. I tried to point out the facts of my lab and fasting being stellar and that I am more then aware of what to do to take care of my blood sugar. I even told her about the diabetes care and nutrition class I taught a few times back home. Then I tried explained to her my concerns about taking medicine at this point. My sugar was normal to borderline so I would become hypoglycemic and my fasting would drop below 70. Metformin stops/slows the absorption of not only glucose BUT some vitamins and minerals (the last thing I need while a fetus is depleting my current stores of these). Lastly it's a category B drug and I don't feel comfortable with taking one if it's not absolutely needed. All of this didn't matter. It was her way or the highway. She wouldn't reason with logic or offer to send me to an internal medicine doctor for a much more educated second opinion. She said I was in denial and that I needed to realize I had diabetes. Obviously I know that considering I was the one who told her I was in the first place.
In conclusion, fuck her....lol. We're going to look for a midwife in FL. I've had my 21 week scan and have had a healthy and normal pregnancy up to this point. I will continue to watch my diet and my blood sugar diligently.
On the plus side, we won't have to keep traveling to AL for OBGYN visits and I'll be the first women to give birth at the nudist camp in 13 years (which apparently makes the older residents really happy..lol).
Also, my cold is much better. Still feeling under the weather but at least I'm sleeping better.

At times some dotors just don't get. I seriously think it's that god - holier than thou complex which prevents many of them from hearing and/or beliving anything their patients tell them.
