So it's almost 3 am. I should be asleep, only because it's late, not because I have to be up early tomorrow. Instead I'm sitting in bed, listening to Sigur Ros, e-window shopping, and thinking about personal style. I'm basically wondering what mine is, and whether or not I even have one. The conclusion I have reached is that I do except it, much like myself, doesn't really fit into a category, it's not well defined.
I got to thinking about other people's personal style, people who I think have a good "look", people who are "original". But maybe being original is not objective, like I've been thinking it is. Maybe originality is not doing something that has never been done, it's not creating things that have never been created, it's not throwing pieces together that have never been paired before. Instead to have an original look or style is to have one that is personalized by one's own life experiences and inexplicable preferences that just happen to manifest in the subconscious.
Maybe personal style and originality come from bits and pieces of one's own life and can be influenced by anything from a fashion icon, to a fashion shoot, a movie poster, a car, a logo, or an old photograph. And all these different ideas and symbols mesh together to form a person's personal collage of style.
Like in the movie Vanilla Sky. When Tech Support is talking to David about the world he has created for himself as the backdrop for his Lucid Dream. A world that has been shaped by a music video he has seen, a father character from an old TV show, an image from album cover, etc.
Maybe this is what everyone is really: a collage of memories. Not necessarily all your own but also what you wish they were, and what you want them to be. This is what people wear on the outside.
Or maybe I'm just trying to tell myself stories so I'll go to sleep.
