TV show - lost
The korean community has been complaining about Daniel Dae kim's character as being this male chauvenistic asian guy who has all the markings of a Korean liquor store owner in south central. I have to agree that at first these complaints seemed somewhat true but I knew that there was more to the show than what those people were complaining about.....so, I decided to watch the 22 episodes my bro has on his computer.
I can see why the korean community would complain about the korean couple's relationship but instead of noticing everything else that they do, they choosed to just harp on the fact that the couple didn't make koreans look good. And that's just dumb because obviouslly there's more to it than that and that is what we call character development.
The characters all have complexity and depth, a purpose and reasoning for everything.......especially in episode 17 where you see why Sun (the korean wife) seem like an weak and obedient wife or why Dae's character seems so old school and overly harsh. it's not that there is a complete korean male dominance thing going on....it's that they are two people who are having marital problems which involves a lack of communication.
the back story shows that this isn't just some whitebread stereotype of korean males... Dae's character is more complex....he's actually very loyal, loving, hard working, clearly unabusive to his wife, family orientated, and is very human when it comes to his own emotions......so like Mr T would say, "i pity the fools" who are overly sensitive and can't watch this gem of a show.
Also, the part when Dae's Character goes back to see his fisherman father during episode 17, it had korean drama all over it......and that's a good thing because I've been hearing it made the audience get choked up on emotions and forget that the dialogue was in korean.
if no one has watched the show because of the bad press from the FCC in the Korean Community..... don't listen to them and go into the show with an open mind. You'll find it an entertaining show that isn't just about bad korean sentiments...... just watch it for fun or to make fun of Daniel's bad korean accent.
...also, Hurley's back story is hilarious......forgot which episode that is though, but don't miss that one.
