the cold, white underbelly of america has been slashed wide open, and its guts are lying all over the side of the road. first, all anybody talked about was the water damage. then, the focus turned to the search and rescue efforts, and to the potential loss of life. now, it's the madness. the total looting of downtown new orleans, the beatings and rapes in the superdome, the complete failure of martial law, the dozens and dozens of dead bodies lying in the streets; police officers being gunned down in broad daylight, and a bare minimum presence of the national guard (partially because many of them are serving in iraq, and partially because the majority of the available guardsmen were tied up in the rescue effort). at least the universal sense of grief and the tremendous loss of life associated with september 11th was counterbalanced by the gravity of the events that happened on that day, but this is only senseless madness
