Happy Hour
written 1998?
resurfaced 2009, one line added, finished--
ready to finally be recorded.
I.
three days ago i looked around
i saw everything going wrong.
two days ago i thought about all the evil things
i (may) have done.
then yesterday i figured out the secret
of the connection
and then today you came around
and knocked me down
and i said
"damn--is there nothing i can do or say?
is there no way that i can make this go away?"
and i said
"damn--i've come so far
but then again,
i've got a long way to go."
as long as i'm still breathing
i'm not leaving
until i find out
what yr saying to me.
II,
all these things i try to hide,
keep em bottled up inside
assure me that you'll always be around,
(come crashing forth whenever yr around,)
within or without.
and the smile that's on my face
will show you i've been lying-
i am really quite afraid
of what you'll say
when i say
"damn--is there nothing i can do or say?
is there no way that i can make you go away?"
and i said
"damn, honey--i've come so far
but then again,
i've got a long, long way to go."
i'm still breathing--
i'm not leaving
until i find out
what yr saying to me.
III.
stand upright and walk like a man,
move them legs as fast as you can,
move toward the light
if you think you deserve it.
stand upright and look straight ahead,
open up them holes in yr head,
or move toward the shadows instead.
in many ways you are above and below
and so on,
and then a postcard from the center comes
calling you back home.
stand upright and open yr eyes,
be aware and be wise--
happy hour's in the middle of it all.
