most people are set in their ways of doing things, right down to minute tasks.
they've inadvertently ritualized it.
maybe that's not accurate--maybe i'm the only one who thinks about it,
but either way, my life is full of rituals, it is my own religion.
i was apparently thinking about the act of shaving as a ritual
when a specific incident related to shaving came to mind.
i really learned to shave from an article in Playboy magazine.
no other article in any magazine on any topic has ever been so convincing and memorable for me.
it instantly and solidly became my shaving bible.
i argued like an orthodox whatever with Mara once
about which step is the proper exfoliation step.
i'd never tried exfoliating before i shaved because the article explained
that exfoliation basically cleans up what the blade has loosened.
still, i argued against her way; i told her that she was wrong.
(wow, dig the religious connotations in that!)
i've always considered myself to be a pretty open-minded guy, a deep, progressive thinker. i think that people are entitled to like or believe whatever they like or believe, but i generally advise them to just keep certain things to themselves.
i don't believe in the organization of religion or any of the resulting organized religions wholly, but i'm at least tolerant of those programmed to repeat their messages.
i'm not afraid of people that look different than me or prefer to have sex differently. i don't think these -isms are black-and-white, right or wrong issues, but many disagree and it tends to cause a lot of ignorant small-mindedness. i make fun of bigots--i have a bumpersticker that says "KANSAS - As Bigoted As You Think," for which i've been flipped off a few times. haha, you angry bigots!
...and idiots that misunderstand the sticker!
but in a hail of shower steam and self-revelation,
as i thought about the incident with Mara
i realized that i'm just a big fat shaving bigot. a shavist? shavinist?
whatever it's called, i've seen the light and am changing my ways--
i'll not pass judgment on those who shave differently than i do.
she was probably right anyway. after all, i was talking about a man's face,
she was talking about a woman's legs.
same planet, different worlds.
