so last saturday i'm in lawrence to see Stinking Lizaveta again.
i first saw this band in new orleans in 2003 on halloween--
for a 3 piece, they deliver insane servings of rock.
the second time i saw them was last year when they played the replay lounge in lawrence.
mid song, the guitarist handed me his guitar
so like a child triumphantly screaming about the home run ball that he just caught
i began to do the only thing i could do: shred.
same thing happened on saturday.
i was standing front and center, and sure enough, the guitarist unplugged his guitar and handed it to me
so i stepped onstage while he made noises by tapping the cable plug.
the drums are exploding, the bass is a thumping stream
"you ready?" he asked me
"fuck yeah!"
so he plugged the guitar in and i began to shred.
i had a pick in my pocket this time and i went off.
while old boy manned the wah pedal and egged me on with his grin
sliding chords, arpeggios, double tapping, the whole bag of tricks came out for my 30 second spotlight.
my best friend called me his hero.
tonight i went to the hurricane and saw the most incredible band i've seen since the first time i was overwhelmed by sleepytime gorilla museum.
Estradasphere is the shi-it. go listen to "Smuggled Mutation".
every single member of the band is incredible, and they all jump from instrument to instrument. i can't truly describe it but my attempt starts off like this:
creepy gypsy/carnival music sweeping into movie-score-esque epics that twist themselves into retro-cocktail hour jazz joints that suddenly nose dive into soul grinding metal and then resurface into a pool of middle-eastern instrumental ballads. served with a side of overtly campy and tongue-in cheek cover tunes.
best ten bucks i've spent this year for sure.
absolutely unbelievable.
