I cannot tell you how much it sucks to be back.
A client of mine goes, "So you're only taking a week, hey? You'll wish you took two".
She was so right. The city seems so small and confining compared to the vast wilderness of BC's south coast and gulf islands.
We stayed a few nights at Dionisio Point (provincial park) and as its fairly remote - we had the place to ourselves. One of the best sunsets I've ever seen was there. Lots of eagles and harbour seals.
We trekked over to Mayne island and set up camp in a private campground. Then jumped in our kayaks and headed to Piggett Bay - but first had to get thru Active Pass. If anyone has ever been thru Active Pass you'll know how hairy it can get. The current was running about 7 knots. Fast.
We chilled on the sandy beaches and explored the coastline then headed back after the tide went slack. Back thru Active Pass while the seals were feeding. No less than 60 seals all bobbing around the kayaks looking at us going "Get the fuck outta here, we're fishing.".
Exhausted we finished off a 2 litre bottle of wine that night and felt goooooood.
The next day we put in at Bennett Bay and hopped a current all the way over to Saturna Island's Winter Cove. Met couple from South Carolina who had chartered a boat and had never even heard of the gulf before. The previous day they had Pacifc White Sided porpoises jumping the wake on the boat. They were having a blast, as were we watching these two funny looking Americans' eyes light up.
We paddled back thru the Belle Chain Islets and saw a colony of Stellar Seals (sea lions), tons of bald eagles and two families of sea otters.
We hit the pub the last night and watched the sun go down over Active Pass and Miners Bay.
Best sunset I've ever seen.
And now that I'm back to work - what am I doing? Reminicing (sp?) about the trip already and slacking at work. I wanna go back and live on Mayne Island. However, at least my folks have some land on Saturna and I can chill there.
C'est tout bon.
