So, I'm in Reader's Corner (a fabulous Raleigh neighborhood bookstore near State) the other day, and I was really wanting an awesome, fun, CRAZY adventure with a female lead character. Well, inspiration was not on my side, I couldn't think of any titles I had heard of previously, plus seeing as this store is just about 100% used books, there weren't any tables laden with new books, nor were there any posted employee recommendations. Nor were there any female employees working, so I didn't even think to ask for suggestions. (My bad for my bias, I will admit!!!)
Anyhow, I look and I look, and I almost get completely lost in a San Francisco moment as I overhear two old hippies having a philosophical discussion about how the earth used to be flat, and isn't too bad they so clearly can disregard the fossil record when the rest of humanity is so deluded......when I almost stumble over and pass up a title, but the recognition of (wasn't that a movie that I rented but never saw??) draws me back and snags me...
Crazy in Alabama by Mark Childress TA-DA!
So I read the first page, it draws me in, I buy it and leave the store hopeful... But wait, it gets better: I really like the book! I love it when I am surprised beyond my own bias of "well, I haven't really heard of the auther, and it was a movie starring Melanie Griffiths, and even though I haven't seen it yet, isn't that supposed to make it bad?!"
I am telling you the truth, this went on in my head, yes! I am sooooo biased, and YES! I was a lit major (I have the degree to show for it) even though I judge books by their cover and write run-on, bad grammer sentences! (I have skills, I just choose not to use them sometimes!
)
Anyway, all this just to tell y'all that I really am enjoying this book, and even though I have not finished it, I give it my two thumbs up! Is that too boring? Fine! Then I give it my 2 erect nipple salute!! (Although you should not take this to mean it is an erotic work of fiction!)
Not that it doesn't have sex in it, it does!! Sex, craziness, decapitation, race riots, a mortuary and Monopoly!! Really, what more could a person ask for? Oh! well, yes, and its funny too!!
