I just found out that a good friend of mine who is 5 months pregnant has been smoking pot daily since she became pregnant and will probably continue until delivery. Her doctor supposedly told her that this was low-risk behavior.

Prenatal use of pot can result in:

-higher risk of miscarriage, pregnancy complications, premature birth, SIDS, and problems with labor and delivery

-increasing levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the blood, reducing oxygen supply to the fetus

-adverse affects to the placental function and the fetal endocrine system

-low birth weight

-withdrawal-like symptoms including excessive crying, tremors, and hyperemesis (severe and chromic vomiting).

-higher risk of infection, severe jaundice, difficulty feeding, breathing problems, low blood sugar, difficulty regulating temperature, bleeding into the brain and problems with vision

-neurological delays, including delay in the development of motor skills

-developmental delays

-difficulty focusing attention and in problem-solving

-disturbances in short-term memory, concentration, and judgment
