We can assume that time is linear, as opposed to something more like a cluster, as Rufus seems to know what he's talking about, and he insists that a certain set of events must occur to spur a causality stem. If time was a cluster instead, causalities would be non-essential, in fact possibly impossible, what with the rampant disorder of time.
Rufus is integral in Bill S. Preston, esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan's success. Any future caused by the success of Bill and Ted's endeavors could not possibly contain the same Rufus that aided them. As we have already reviewed, time is linear and causality is actual, and for Rufus to come from the utopian future created by Bill and Ted, before Rufus is born Bill and Ted must create the future in the first place, in which case Rufus has no need to aid them. The only need for this is if the past could occur more than once, which would suggest that all of time is one giant loop, and even so, if time would eventually loop back around, there would always be another opportunity for their success, without Rufus. I believe that this is not the case. Instead, Rufus is secretly a causality mapper from some dystopian timeline, and he discovered that all timelines eventually were doomed to fail. He had calculated that the cause of the dystopia he called home stemmed from Bill and Ted's utter failure at musicianship, and took upon the task of creating the utopia from which he claimed to have come. It was the only way. In addition to the impossibility of joining the causality loop at the farthest point in the future, Rufus' means of time travel is further evidence of his dystopian origins. Surely, if he had come from a majestic, technologically advanced civilization, the time travel device used would be less conspicuous than a late-20th century American phone booth, since it sticks out like a sore thumb in nearly every point in time. Frankly, the phone booth was the best that Rufus could produce, considering the resources of his world. I will get to the bottom of this.
