The Black Crowes - Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA 9/30/05
Sometimes all you can say is "Wow"! Back from the second night so let me go into it...
I was going to see this show with a co-worker Suki, her BF Barry, and her son Joe. 2 special events here, it was her b-day and would be Joe's 1st concert. To tell the truth I was a little worried going with them. I rather not say my reasons but let's just say I told Cindy about it and she came up with the nickname "The Battling Bickersons"! Of course we had to turn around not once, but twice before we even got out of her town. First she forgot her cigarettes. Then she realized she forgot the tickets! Thank God we caught that early! Barry was driving and made great time. I was concerned of course going up "Indian Curse Highway" (Rt. 55) but it wasn't my car and maybe I avoided the whammy!
Sue and Joe sparked it up. I burned my 2 disc Crowes mix for the trip, so the tunes were playing. The battling was at a bare minimum so it was an enjoyable ride. The Yahoo directions worked great even with the detours. At least I knew to look out for them after the adventure with Renee the night before. We got there pretty early. I was in my seat by 7:15. The seats were 10 rows closer than the last show, but all the way over on the left. Still great seats and once again I was on the last seat of the row for maximum comfort. I even had a pillar nearby which I needed by the end for support! Got to pick up a t-shirt tonight, a real throwback to comemorate the Philly/DC shows. Covered in pot leaves made even funnier since I don't indulge. I just dug the look! Time flew by quick and before I knew it the lights went down and the band came on.
I was hearing some feedback and I'm thinking "no way"! Sho' nuff! The break into "Midnight From The Inside Out"! One of my favorite tunes ever and for only the 2nd time since the hiatus. "Thick And Thin" kept everybody movin'. Then a great "Chris-ism" introducing "Hotel Illness"..."This is not a political statement, but George Bush doesn't want you to dance."! Got to hear one of the unreleased songs they always play live, "Another Roadside Tragedy". "Descending" was sweet as usual. Next up was a surprise, "Cypress Tree" played for the 1st time since the hiatus. And I STILL don't care what anyone says, "Lions" is a great album!
I got to hear a Neil Young cover, "L.A." featuring Marc on lead vocals. "Nonfiction" lead into an almost ominous sounding jam. "Hard To Handle" seemed rare in the 1st set. That ended on a great jam too. Next up totally blew my fucking mind!! They covered Pink Floyd's "Fearless"!!! Rich was on lead vocals, Marc provided harmonies (Chris was offstage for this one). First time played on that one, simply amazing!!! It was time for the break. I asked everyone how they were liking the concert and they were all into it. Joe & Sue got to really party with the beer and mother nature. Barry to his credit didn't indulge at all and was the responsible designated driver. Me? I just high off the tunes.
They opened up the 2nd set with another cover, "Song Of Love" by Stephen Still's group Manassas. Then we got that awesome jam that lead into "Thorn In My Pride". Only 1 of 2 repeats from the previous night. Got another great "Gorzilla" drum solo and the harmonica jam. Next up was a very sweet "Girl From A Pawnshop". Made me wish Cindy was there with me. Then we got into the New Orleans like groove of the "Downtown Money Waster>Share The Ride>Mellow Down Easy" medley. After that was a sweet cover of Dylan's "Forever Young" with Chris really shining and even strumming an acoustic. Another "Lions" track "Cosmic Friend" followed and then a nice surprise, "A Conspiracy"! Sometimes I wonder if the band reads their message boards. The fans were begging for that one and it magically appears! "Twice As Hard" wrapped it up and a pretty rare encore choice I think, "Tied Up And Swallowed". I left right at the end to get in line for the instant live CD's.
I thought I would beat people to the punch, but it was still long, winding up the staircase and around. Still not as bad as the night before, the line moved pretty quick and I had my copy in my hand. Thanks to my ride for waiting!
Getting out of Philly was pretty smooth and before I knew it we were over the bridge playing the concert we just saw on the stereo. I was happy everyone enjoyed the show. Don't know if I made 'em true blue converts, but they want a copy of the show so it's a start! Was a pleasure to to share the concert with them and whadda ya know? No battling!
